Description
This scroll, dated the 5th month of Bunsei 3 (1820), is a 'mokuroku'; list of techniques, from a school of Japanese gunnery/musketry called Nakajima ryu, a school which appears to be still around today to some degree. A Web search of the school name in Japanese gave several hits, showing demonstrations by Nakajima ryu. The founder of the school was a descendant of a retainer of Oda Nobunaga who took refuge in Bishu Nakajima-Sato village in present day Aichi Prefecture. He studied the hojutsu schools of Buei ryu, Jitoku ryu and Sasaki ryu, before founding his own school. The grave of the founder can be found in the Zenrinji Temple in Osaka. This scroll was issued by Fujishige Oitaro Hiromichi, a name that can clearly be seen on the lineage of the school shown in the Bugei Ryu Daijiten (p.652). Under his red stamp can be seen his 'kao', a beautifully-drawn symbol used as a signature on formal documents. The school was the main gunnery school of the Awa Domain, in present-day Tokushima Presecture, on the southern island of Shikoku. The scroll measures about 190cm long by 18cm wide. The condition is extremely good. I can ship this scroll worldwide by EMS, providing the buyer with a tracking number and link to the Japanese post office track & trace web page. Payment by Paypal only, please.
