Today we are offering: AN EXTREMELY RARE JAPANESE SCROLL DRAWN ON SATIN BY THE SISTER OF EMPEROR TAISHO, Ca. 1918, A GIFT OF THE JAPANESE IMPERIAL FAMILY This is an extraordinary calligraphic painted scroll, very rare, and an item of considerable historical importance. The calligrapher was the younger sister of the Japanese Emperor Taisho (1912—1926), and it is dated "Auspicious Day in November, Sixth Year of Taisho." Japanese always use the number of the year in an Emperor's reign to date things. This year, 2008, is the 19th year of Heisei. Based on this methodology, the scroll would correspond to the Western-era date of November, 1918. It was later presented to my grandfather around the year 1923 by a surrogate for the princess—probably a lady-in-waiting—named Sato, Yoshiko. The scroll is Buddhist in nature, being a prayer extracted from the Lotus Sutra (the Buddhist Bible), intoning the name of Buddha. The scroll was painted on (originally) white satin rather than the more usual matte, sized silk or rice paper and—other than the inevitable brown age spots typical of any scroll of this age painted on silk—it is in an excellent state of preservation, with no tears, no missing or torn threads, no insect damage, no chips to the roller, etc. Studying calligraphy and the skill of calligraphic brushwork was considered one of the prerequisites for all members of the Imperial family, and the princess clearly excelled in this pursuit. The scroll's overall mounting is on exquisite celadon blue-green brocade with decorative elements (flowers) in gold and silver thread (the silver has tarnished over the past century—see photos 13 and 14). The "inner framing" of the scroll (nakamawashi—the area next to the painting itself), consists of beautiful, mellow gold brocade woven with a pattern of what appears to be clouds and phoenixes (photos 8, 9, and 10). The two traditional hanging tabs (futai—close-up, photo 10 and 13) are made of the same brocade. At the top and bottom of the painting are approximately 3-inch wide bands (ichimonji) of deep burnt-orange raw silk embroidered with the Imperial family's crest, five 16-petaled chrysanthemums in pure white silk floss. Only members of the Imperial family are allowed to use the 16-petaled chrysanthemum crest (close-ups, photos 11 and 12).The roller-ends (jiku-saki) at the bottom of the scroll—which are traditionally made from bone, porcelain, or rare woods—are in this case most unusually made of exquisitely worked cloisonne enamel (shippo-yaki) in shades of translucent deep green, with a design of red, yellow, and white lotuses with gilt edges (photos 15 - 19).The paulownia-wood storage box (kiri-bako—photos 20 - 24) is used to keep the scroll safe from insects and moisture, since insects detest some component in this particular type of wood, and paulownia wood is known to keep out moisture. It is embellished with woven purple, tasseled silk cords, affixed to the box with tiny silver 16-petaled chrysanthemums (close-up photos 20 and 22), a further reminder of the Imperial family connection. The (approximate) size of the scroll and storage box are as follows: Length: (unrolled) 78.5 inches (199.39 cm) (box) 30.5 inches (77.47 cm) Width: 26.75 inches (67.94 cm), top 29.25 inches (74.29 cm), bottom, including roller (box) 3.25 inches (8.25 cm) Weight: 3.12 lbs. (1.415 kg., unwrapped) We hope the eventual buyer will enjoy this truly extraordinary piece of history and art as much as we, and our families have before us. NOTE: We will include a set of dark green marble hanging scroll weights (fuchin) with the scroll. These are hung on each end of the bottom roller (jiku) to help keep the hanging scroll smooth and to weigh it down so it doesn't whip about in the wind. We will also include an info. sheet describing how to care for a Japanese scroll so that it can be handed down to your children and grandchildren in as perfect condition as it is today.
