Description
JAPANESE ZEN CALLIGRAPHY HANGING SCROLL AN ORIGINAL WORK OF ART - HAND PAINTED IN THE 1950s, USING THE ANCIENT SUMI BRUSH TECHNIQUE.. translated to English, the scroll answers the ancient Zen question: "WHAT IS THE SOUND OF ONE HAND CLAPPING?".. BROCADED RICE PAPER, ALL-ORIGINAL MUSEUM ART, OVER SEVEN FEET TALL, WITH JADEITE WEIGHTS AND TASSLES IN ORIGINAL BOX.. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL HAND-PAINTED WORK OF ART FROM THE 1950s - NOT A MODERN REPRO, NOT A LITHOGRAPH, NOT A POSTER.. Remember that as an original, it is one of a kind, even if the artist made several, no two will be alike. I've had Japanese artwork experts and collectors examine this scroll and give me an estimated value between $700.00 - $1000.00.. this is an original work of art, over fifty years old.. I've added a bonus to this auction: a fifty year-old Japanese Sumi painting book, printed in Japan on rice paper and hand-stitch bound, authored by a Japanese master of Sumi painting.. below the pictures of the hanging scroll are pictures and details about this book which is included as a free bonus to the winner.. This beautiful Zen calligraphy scroll is called a "Kakejiku." It is to be hung in the"tokonoma" which is in the best room in the house andusually a room for guests or a living room. The writing is a rather deep expression of a Zen Buddhist concept by a revered Japanese monk of the middle Edo period. It includes the famous discussion of the sound of one hand clapping. It concludes by making the point that "...When you hear the sound that cannot be heard, then shall you can hear a true sound." I consulted with a close friend, a retired, native Japanese University Professor of Philosophy who is fluent in Japanese and knows these kinds of scrolls well to obtain a translation of the calligraphy.. and the authenticity of its design.. here's what he had to say: "The traditional way of framing the calligraphy (or the central painting) is to use older cloths with either Gold or Silver broidery threads, but the recent framing (meaning 20th century).. is done with the papers like this scroll. And as this is likely derived from a Zen monastery or temple, it is quite appropriate to have this paper framing. The wording of the calligraphy is about the famous KOAN by Takuan (1685-1768), "What is the sound of the clapping with one hand?" This Koan is widely known in Japan (and probably the best and the most famous koan by a Japanese Rinzai Sect Zen master.) Officially it derives from his writing, called "Yabukoji." The calligraphy itself does not state the Koan, but it may be said to be a response to that Koan. This would suggest that the artist of the scroll is a contemporary Zen master." The translation of the scroll's calligraphy: "The genuine clapping by the both hands makes a sound, How could there be the clapping sound by one hand?" However, this answer to the famous Koan sounds rather mundane, but the truth is often not extraordinary, but rather worldly. The Japanese reading: "Shin Sho ai-utte Koe-ari, Soushu ni Nani no Onseika aru?" Here is his translation of the two red "chop marks" on the left side of the scroll giving the artist's name, also from my friend, a native Japanese Univeristy Professor of Philosophy: "Due to the stylized curving of the name, it is very likely to read: Tetsuo Suda (the upper seal), Ryo ??? tei ( the lower seal). Thus, the artist's name is Tetsuo Suda. The second seal appears to indicate that the artist may be likely related to a Zen monastery." you are bidding on a 74" tall (a little over six feet) by approximately 21" wide Japanese hanging scroll, an original work of museum-quality art created by a master of Japanese Sumi brush painting, purchased in the mid-1950s.. it is over 50 years old.. see the photographs below - this is the actual item on which you are bidding. It is a unique, original work of art by a Master of the Sumi brush technique.. this is a nearly seven foot tall (with the weights and tassles on it).. Japanese Sumi brush, black watercolor Zen calligraphy scroll, an original work of art, on heavy, white rice paper hand-framed by brocade-patterned Golden and Black papers.. ready to hang and display.. my Parents bought this stunning work of art at the Pasadena Museum of Art sometime in the mid-1950s.. You'll also get its original box, which is pictured and included in this auction.. the central part of the scroll, with the hand-painted Japanese calligraphy, is hand-made and hand-assembled Japanese rice paper which has a bit of foxing from the top wooden rod being rolled against it in its box for the past ten years or so.. it was hanging in our family home since purchased in the mid-1950s, but put back in its box and into Storage about 2000, and i recently discovered it amongst my Folks' possessions.. the scroll is bordered around all four sides by ornate black brocade patterned papers.. and on the top and bottom by Golden brocaded paper.. close-ups are below.. the bottom of the scroll is affixed to a white ceramic rod with green painted flourishes on both exposed ends.. from which hang the two Jadeite weights and tassles.. affixed to the top wooden rod is a long purple length of cord with which to hang it on a wall.. everything is original.. it comes with its two original egg-shaped weights made of light green Jadeite with brown tassles which slip onto the ends of the bottom ceramic rod to give it more weight as it hangs, and they add an extra flourish to the whole presentation.. there are three vivid red stamps or chop marks on the central and upper right areas of the white, center section - those are also shown in the pictures.. see above for the translation of the artist's name.. I briefly hung the scroll up outside for the purpose of shooting these pictures in adequate light, and provide for you many pictures, including full-length and close-ups of different areas of the scroll, and its ornate, brocaded border paper.. it was hanging outside (in dry, clear weather).. for no more than ten minutes while i shot these pictures.. then after photographing it, i carefully rolled it up and put it back in its box, which is also pictured.. the box is in excellent condition for its age, with all end flaps intact.. it has no date or price stickers or barcodes on it.. this scroll originally hung in our family home in the mid-1950s.. which was not far from Pasadena where my folks visited the world-famous Pasadena Art Museum often to view exhibitions, and buy art like this for home decoration.. the scroll has no tears, no rips, no holes, no repairs.. and is a museum-quality piece of original Japanese artwork.. almost seven feet tall inlucidng the weights and tassles.. hand-made, and hand-assembled Japanese rice paper including the intricately-patterned borders or "framing".. a true, original work of Museum-quality art.. white ceramic rod at the bottom, from which hang two green Jadeite egg-shaped weights.. their braided strands of fabric are a little disheveled from Storage, but could easily be gently steamed and become straight again.. the tassles' loops fit through a hole in each weight, and are knotted so they won't slip out.. all-original, also over fifty years old.. the Japanese calligraphy was hand-painted using the ancient Sumi watercolor brush technique.. this is an original work of art.. it is not a litho, or a cheap poster off a printing press!.. the original box, about 20" long, in which this scroll was purchased in the mid-1950s at the Pasadena Museum of Art.. the box has no price stickers or barcodes.. no tape repairs, both end flaps intact.. affixed to the top rod is a the original, three foot length of light purple woven cord, which forms a loop with which you can hang the scroll from a wall hook of any kind.. that purple cord is original to this scroll.. variation in darkness from one picture to the next is due to my photography, and shooting these pictures outdoors, in shaded sunlight.. the three red ink "chop marks" - the signature of the artist.. this scroll, rolled up in its original box, plus the two Jadeite weights with tassles, separately wrapped, will be shipped to you in a USPS Priority mail tube, with plenty of cushioning material, fully Insured with Delivery confirmation. Insurance is INCLUDED.. due to the size of the shipping package, and USPS regulations, I cannot use a USPS Priority mail tube for International mailing.. but i will use a proper, sturdy box, and it will be well-packed, padded, and protected, wherever it goes.. BONUS!.. Along with the scroll and its weights, tassels, and box as described and pictured above, you'll also get this fifty year-old book: "Step by Step in Sumi Painting", by Professor Motoi Oi.. Japan House Of Art, NY, 1960. Original Wraps. Book Condition: Fine or better. No Jacket, as-issued.. First American Edition. 8vo. Unpaginated (28pp.). Japanese sewn binding.
