nahasaru Store UNIQUE VINTAGE 4-PANEL JAPANESE WALL SCREEN W. TIGER LILLIES Search STUNNING VINTAGE 4-PANEL JAPANESE WALL SCREEN WITH PAINTING OF TIGER LILIES       Welcome, and thank you for looking!         Today we are offering:         ·     A STUNNING, VINTAGE 4-PANEL JAPANESE WALL SCREEN WITH A PAINTING OF TIGER LILIES ON A UNIQUE GROUND OF PAPER-THIN CORK RECTANGLES, IN A ROSEWOOD FRAME       This is a truly stunning and completely unique vintage Japanese folding screen of the four-fold/four-panel variety (as opposed to the six-fold, full sized room divider style), meant originally to sit on the tatami–matted floor and shield the occupants from draughts. Nowadays, of course, they are mounted flat on the wall like a large painting, but have the practical aspect that they can still be folded up to save space for storage.       We have never seen a Japanese screen similar to this one. Although it's an overused word, unique has to be used to describe its style, execution, and even medium. The subject is a group of Japanese tiger lilies (oni yuri), in full blossom and bud, larger than life size. It is exquisitely painted with considerable—although not clinical—detail.       The style is remarkably Impressionistic/Modernistic (as opposed to traditional), and it wouldn't be a surprise to learn that the unknown artist had spent time either studying Western art in Japan, or even in Europe. There are unmistakable Japanese elements to the painting, however: It is clearly tied to a specific season (summer)—as almost all Japanese art is tied to a single season, and subtly conveys the humid, intense heat of high summer in Japan.       The tiger lilies themselves are painted in rich-but-muted tones of cinnabar shading to burnt orange and fox red, with appropriate touches of soft white, and beautifully detailed stamens. The lush foliage is exquisitely drawn and rendered in subtle tones of green—sage, celadon, soft bluish jade green, and even celery. The palette is, nevertheless, quite restrained—especially when contrasted with the more exuberant versions of the nature genre.       The spatial arrangement is superb, showing the typical love of "balanced asymmetry" so much a part of the traditional Japanese art aesthetic: two of the fully open tiger lilies are painted on the second panel (counting from right to left), while the tallest, most dominant lily appears on the third panel, with a fourth open bloom—again subservient—spilling over onto the fourth panel. The painting is true to the Japanese art (and Ikebana) principle of the triangle—often expressed as "heaven, man, and earth."  One of the most intriguing things about this screen, in addition to the style of the painting, of course, is the ground, which—while perfectly flat—consists of paper-thin, slices of cork arranged in asymmetrical rectangles, giving a much more intriguing and varied background than the far more usual rice paper or silk.     The painting itself is in wonderful, perfect condition with no flaws, damage, or other issues. Unfortunately, this screen was painted by an unknown, but clearly masterly painter, who regrettably left the work unsigned. Although it is usual in traditional screens to present them with an intervening border of brocade between the painted area and the frame, this one lacks that conventional touch. On the other hand, the frame (also in perfect condition) appears to be of rosewood (shitan in Japanese) and is somewhat larger (and consequently heavier) than the more usual lacquered frames. As a concession to tradition it is, however, embellished with beautifully worked gilt-bronze corner pieces and nail heads.     This is a unique example of brilliantly original Japanese art in as close to perfect condition as any vintage item can be, and I urge you not to miss the opportunity to own an exceptional (and reasonably priced for the quality) piece of Japanese art.  The approximate measurements are as follows:     Height:                   3 feet  (91.44 cm)         Width (total):          5 feet, 10 inches (155.44 cm) (per panel):             1.6 feet  (48.76 cm)   Weight (approx.):    12.5 lbs.   (5.66 kg., unwrapped)       We hope the eventual buyer will enjoy this beautiful screen as much as we, and our families before us, have done.      Auction-related information:   ************************************************************************************* IMPORTANT—PLEASE READ—!!!!!   RECENTLY, SEVERAL BUYERS HAVE COMPLETELY DISREGARDED THIS NOTICE OR HAVE BLITHELY NOT BOTHERED TO READ IT.  WE CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH:   PLEASE WAIT FOR US TO SEND YOU AN INVOICE FOR YOUR PURCHASE!  !!!!!  DO  NOT  USE  EITHER  THE  E-BAY  OR  AUCTIVA  CHECKOUT  SYSTEMS !!!!! Remember that all sales are final, and all items are sold “as is.” We are not dealers. These are items we or our families have owned, and they have been lovingly cared for since they were first acquired.       NOTE:   ·                     We very much want people to be happy—and that is doubly true for our customers. So, although all sales are indeed final, if you have any “issues” let’s discuss them prior to your leaving feedback. We're always willing to try to find a happy medium—both in life and on E-Bay.          Certain images and/or photos used in this template are the copyrighted property of Macmillan digital publishing USA and are used with permission.
